This article about my two-day backpacking Trip in Nyeri was first published on my travel blog, Kenyan Backpacker.
“The human body is a masterpiece of engineering. Even better, it adapts to its conditions: physical, emotional, or spiritual. With this knowledge, you will be amazed at how many impossibilities you can turn into possibilities in any sphere of life. All it takes is ruthless determination, willingness to learn, endurance, and a positive attitude.”
This is a quote I had come across from a friend’s Facebook post. I may have assumed its relevance then as just another motivational quote. Not after having a weekend of physical and mental challenge did I realize its truth.
The previous day was hectic, and the idea was beginning to wither every single minute. What if it rained, what if there is no trial, are you going to stand the sun? These were the questions that almost made me give up on the trip. By midnight, the excuses had outdone the desire to move! I wasn’t going anywhere – at least this was the conclusion I came up with when I went to bed.
The Tough Call to Adventure
The unconscious mind never sleeps. When my body was dead asleep, my brain cells were still going through the idea. By 6 am in the morning, I had to make the decision and the only way was to toss a coin. I flipped the ten shillings coin four consecutive times, and it was a tail. I decided to toss it for the fifth time, the last time. When it landed in the palm of my hand, the face of Kenya’s second president was staring at me. It was ahead. I had to move!
This is how I ended up walking from Kenol, Thika to Murang’a town, Visit Chinga dam in Nyeri, and hike the Aberdares in search of waterfalls.
The experiences
- Interaction with locals along the Kenol-Murang’a road.
- Matatu ride from Murang’a town to Othaya
- Morning Sunrise view and boat ride at the Chinga Dam
- Waterfall sight at Chinga dam
- Nature and tea plantations in the region
- A visit to the Baden Powell Museum
- Hiking in the Aberdares, chasing waterfalls
- View of Zaina Falls and other smaller waterfalls in the Aberdare

The only way to show some justice to the unpolluted natural beauty of the places and the amazing landscape, I believe, is through pictures.
